Dynamic Lures J-Spec, The Hookup

Dynamic Lures J-Spec

Dynamic Lures‘ J-Spec multi-species jerkbait is a shallow diving lure that comes in a variety of colors. For this review I used the chartreuse shad color. The J-Spec dives down from 1 to 4 feet in depth, and suspends when not reeling. There is a small rattle inside which I really liked for its subtlety. Viewed from any angle it has a relatively slim profile and lifelike swimming motion in the water.

I received this lure in one of my monthly subscription boxes in August and was immediately looking forward to trying it out. It worked out well, since I happened to be heading out shortly afterwards to catch some pike for a (failed) pickling experiment.

Taking it out

My destination for the day was the Winnipeg River, which holds plenty of species to catch. Bass, walleye, pike, and perch to name a few. Certainly a good place to test out a lure labeled so prominently as a multi-species bait. While I had my share of other disappointments on that trip, the J-Spec was not one of them.  With only a few casts, I had fish hitting it hard. In no time at all I had landed a nice keeper sized pike.

Although I often joke that you can catch pike with an old shoe, there is certainly a difference between good quality lures and poor. Pike will often attack anything, but on a quality lure they will come in from farther away, hit harder, and hold on longer. That is exactly what happened with the J-Spec.

Performance

Swimming through the water, it looks very nice. The color is fantastic and really shines even in murky or darker water. Since it only dives to a maximum of 4 feet, it is always close to any sunlight that’s available. On the chartreuse color in particular that I was using, this made it easy for both the myself and the fish to spot it from a long ways away.

This was evident with the pike that I caught. I was fishing in shallow water and had a good view all around, so I was able to easily see the direction that the pike came from. Not only that, but I had been fishing deeper a few minutes earlier with a different lure and had the pike hit it but not hold on. Then I threw the J-Spec in the shallows.I had the pike zero in on it and come in from the deeper area like a torpedo. He hammered the lure and held on tight until I landed him.

How a lure moves in the water is also important, and there is certainly no complaints for this lure in that regard. Movement is very nice, consistent, and most importantly, attractive to predators. The water was too warm for me to be finding walleye with this lure, however it triggered strikes from pike and bass fairly equally throughout the day.

The Bottom Line

For any of these tackle reviews, it always comes down to a simple question. Does it work?

Likewise, there is a simple answer for this J-Spec. Absolutely.

If I am in unfamiliar waters, not sure what type of fish are around, or am just not targeting anything specific, then the J-Spec will be a great choice. Sure, if I want to target one specific species, I might go with a more specialized lure. Senko for bass, a big flashy spoon for pike, lindy rig with a nightcrawler for walleye, and etc. However, if I just want to go out and catch a variety of fish, then the Dynamic Lures’ J-Spec multi-species jerkbait works exactly as advertised.
