Ball Tail Grub, from Crazy Hick Baits – The Hookup

Ball Tail Grub from Crazy Hick Baits

This week’s Hookup review is about the Ball Tail Grub, from Crazy Hick Bait Co. I received this in my Ice Fishing Elite box from Simple Fishing. Although I had never before really targeted panfish, I loved the look and action of these plastics. It was not too long after opening this box that I was invited out to fish a new lake where we would need small panfish lures. What perfect timing to try these out!

Taking it Out

We loaded up the ice fishing gear and headed into the Whiteshell Provincial park. Our target was primarily Cisco, or as they are known around here, Tulibee. Cisco is something I had never fished for, and I was excited to see my first one. Despite being a larger sized fish, up to 19 inches long, they have tiny mouths. Small mouths means small baits are needed. Enter the ball tail grubs.

Performance

Once we were set up on the ice, we had some fantastic conditions for fishing. The water was clear and so was the ice, allowing us to see the shiny silver flash of the Cisco from 15 feet below us. Lots of fun! As for the Ball Tail Grubs, they had a great twitchy action in the water that drew fish in nicely. The grubs do a great job of mimicking a flittering little water insect, providing a tempting opportunity to our targets.

Crazy Hick Baits has a big variety of colors for the Ball Tail Grub and it worked so well that I immediately ordered a variety for myself. This plastic attracted Cisco and Perch. I have no doubt it will also work well on Crappie and Trout when I go for them. Any fish that eats insects and other small baits should be attracted to these lures, and anyone interested in an effective plastic would do well to grab a pack or two.
